Clever jackals, kind goats and wise grandmothers — the classics of Nepali firesides, retold in a few minutes each.

Legends of the valley

How Kathmandu rose from a great lake, why the crow eats first at Tihar — the stories hiding inside every tradition.

Stories that travel both ways

Each tale ends with a question to ask Hajurbuwa or Hajuraama — so the next chapter comes from your own family.

Draw the lake that became a valley

You’ll need

  • Paper
  • Crayons or pencils
  • A grown-up nearby

About 20 minutes

  1. Listen to the story of Manjushree and the great lake — about five minutes.

  2. Draw the enormous lake ringed by mountains, with a lotus glowing in the middle.

  3. Cut the gorge! Tear one edge of the paper and let the imaginary water rush out.

  4. Hold up the new valley on the weekend video call and tell the story back.

Grandparents grew up with this legend — watching their grandchild retell it is the whole point.
